Argyll & Bute Beach Forum

The beginning

The Forum was launched in Oban and the event was attended by around 35 delegates from all corners of Argyll and Bute.  Several community groups and organisations came along to discuss the state of Argyll’s beaches and what we can all do to help manage them.

There were three guest speakers from Keep Scotland Beautiful, the Marine Conservation Society and the Firth of Clyde Forum who gave short presentations on issues affecting beaches and the marine environment. If you would like to see their Powerpoint presentations follow the links below.
The presentation from Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB) is titled “Beach Awards and you” and includes details on the criteria needed for a beach to obtain the Blue Flag and the Seaside Award.
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) showed the presentation “MCS Beach Litter Surveys” and covers the effects of marine litter and MCS’ activities to stop it.  You can find information on the Beachwatch, Adopt-a-beach and the Good Beach Guide projects.
The Firth of Clyde Forum is one of the several forums in Scotland set up to co-ordinate and manage coastal areas.  The presentation provides information on the work carried out by the Forum.

Aim of the Argyll and Bute Beach Forum

The aims of the Forum were discussed at the launch event.  Several issues were highlighted in the discussion including the importance of raising awareness on marine issues, sharing best practice and sustainable management.  One of the Forum aims identified by the group was the promotion of environmental awareness through education and networking.

We are hoping to create a steering group in the coming months that will further develop the Forum’s aims and will discuss ways to achieve them.

For more information on the Forum’s aims and objectives download the “Argyll and Bute Beach Forum Report” from the Beach Project publications link.

The Way Forward

Some of the short and long-term actions that The Beaches and Marine Litter Project Officer will carry out to develop the Forum include:

  • To produce a  periodic e-bulletin (or paper) to be distributed to everyone interested in the Forum,

  • To create a steering group to assist in the development of the Forum. If you think you could contribute to this group please let us know,

  • To organise an annual Beach Forum event open to the general public,

  • To create a database of organisations, community groups and individuals involved or interested in managing our local beaches and shoreline.
